Child Safe Standard 1
Child Safe Standard 1: Child Safety and wellbeing is embedded in institutional leadership, governance and culture.
Gymnastics NSW demonstrates child safe and wellbeing practices though our governance and leadership practices. Child Safety is modelled at all levels of sport, training and education and by having a culture of continuous improvement.

Gymnastics NSW is committed to child safety and wellbeing. We are committed to the United Nations International Rights of the Child and have adopted the National Child Safe Principles. Gymnastics NSW  with Gymnastics Australia signed a Child Safe Commitment 2019 reiterating our commitment. A number of Gymnastics NSW policies and frameworks have child safety at their core. Please see Child Safe Principle 10  relating to our policy and procedure documentation.
Guiding Principles and Key Behaviours

Child Safe Standard 1:
Child Safety and wellbeing is embedded in institutional leadership, governance and culture.
Article 3 of the United Nations Rights of the Child: All adults should do what is best for children. When adults make decisions they should think about how their decisions will affect children.
Key Behaviours: Gymnastics NSW acts to empower children and young people to have a voice. We act upon feedback and concerns and promote sharing of good practice about child safety and wellbeing.

What we expect to hear children say:
"Adults in this organization ask my opinion and listen to what I say."
"I feel Safe"
"I feel respected and trust the adults looking after me."
Ongoing Commitment
  • The Gymnastics NSW Board of Directors has an ongoing commitment to child safety and wellbeing. It has been a standing agenda item since 2011.
  • Gymnastics NSW was the first state to employ a dedicated Child Safe Officer in 2015.
  • In 2008, Gymnastics NSW was the first state to require all clubs to recruit an MPIO as an affiliation requirement. This is now an adopted requirement for Gymnastics Australia and all States and Territories.
  • Gymnastics NSW was awarded by Workcover NSW Safe Sport in 2009 for member protection strategies.
