16 January 2020

Gymnastics NSW seek to empower the athletes within our sport to celebrate their bodies and the extraordinary things that they can do. With the startling reality that body dissatisfaction is rapidly on the rise, Gymnastics NSW have commenced a 3 year community engagement program with Butterfly Foundation.

As a leading national voice in supporting the needs of our wider community, Butterfly Foundation represents all people affected by eating disorders and negative body image – a person with the illness, their family and their friends.

GNSW Child Safe & Compliance Manager, Kim Creamer, is excited Gymnastics NSW is the first sporting organisation in the country to engage in the program.

“Gymnastics NSW seeks to empower our athletes, coaches, families and friends to see the warning signs, and be able to access professional help and support. Our Community Engagement Program with Butterfly Foundation is an accomplishment in support of the National Body Positive Movement and will be a key component in our continual commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people in our sport.

From a simple chin up to triple somersaults, our gymnasts are using their bodies each and every day to achieve imaginable things.  By engaging with Australia largest not-for-profit supporting those with eating disorders and negative body image, we look forward to providing opportunities of building awareness, education and empowering body positivity.”

The program will see the development of child friendly messaging, awareness and response, education and interactive webinar resourses specifically tailored to Gymnastics NSW athletes, coaches and families.

“Gymnastic coaches, judges and the general sporting environment have a strong influence on how young people perceive their bodies and a vital role in enabling early intervention.  We are excited to be working in collaboration to support the health and wellbeing of the NSW Gymnastic community.” said Kevin Barrow, Chief Executive Officer for the Butterfly Foundation.
