Life Membership: Bernie Spedding

Following the 2020 Annual General Meeting, Gymnastics NSW wish to congratulate Bernie Spedding on receiving a Life Membership to the NSW Gymnastic Association.

Early Years
Having commenced gymnastics in 1971 at Sutherland Police Boys Club, Bernie began coaching in 1975 and moved to Heathcote Engadine Boys and Girls Club in 1976 /77. Following a short hiatus between ’78 and ’81 Bernie resumed coaching at Heathcote Engadine in ‘81/’82 and has coached for the club ever since (almost 40 years), including many school programs.

Service to Gymnastics NSW
Previously part of the Southern Region Bernie spent several years as the Southern Region WAG Coordinator and assistant Competition Organiser before the Outer City Region was formed in 1993 where she continued in an official capacity.

In 2001 Bernie became the Outer City Regional Supervisor and Treasurer. Bernie held the position of Treasurer from 2001 – 2020, Region Supervisor 2001 - 2006, 2008, 2009, 2013 – 2020, and WAG Coordinator 2011 – 2012 and 2014. For those who are familiar with the Outer City Region, they will be familiar with the challenges faced by the Region over the years including a number of very enthusiastic competitive club programs. Bernie competently managed these situations and ensured not only continuity within the Region but also its success, particularly in the later years where it helped promote the growth of Team Gym.

Pioneering TeamGym
Bernie joined the GNSW GfA Committee in 2013 as Team Gym Coordinator, a position she held until 2017 when she moved into the role of National Team Gym Project Officer on the Gymnastics Australia Commission, a position she still holds today.

Bernie’s most outstanding achievement would have to be the growth of Team Gym in NSW and Australia. Pioneered by NSW in 2012 the Gymsport is now GNSW’s second largest competitive program by virtue of participation at the State Championships and it is delivered truly state wide with participation across almost every GNSW region. The Gymsport was taken on by Gymnastics Australia in 2016 and has featured in National Clubs since 2017. Bernie personally attended a number of education conferences across Australia to promote and encourage its growth and development.

Bernie was a Sydney International Gymnastics Festival Committee Member in 2012, an event that saw participation from several countries in display gymnastics, including a gala performance at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre.

Opting for a sea-change, Bernie relocated to Grafton in the Far North Coast Region this year where she will continue to coach at the newly opened Grafton PCYC.
