Good Sports

As a way of promoting the positive contribution gymnastics clubs make to communities Gymnastics New South Wales is working in partnership with ADF to deliver the ‘Good Sports Project’.

‘Good Sport’s’ seeks to raise awareness about issues relating to Drug and Alcohol use by support clubs with resources, training and recognition tools.
It is a free program which accredits clubs according to club policies and attitudes towards the use of drugs and alcohol.

Because most gymnastics clubs are not involved in direct serving of alcohol you may ask why this program is of benefit to your club? Ask yourself….:

• Is your club linked to facilities that serve alcohol?
• Does your club receive financial support from funds derived from the selling of alcohol?
• Does your club hold events where alcohol is served – fund raising, social events?
• Does your club use alcohol as prizes such as in raffles etc?
• Does your club participate in away events and competitions that gymnasts, coaches and officials may be within facilities that serve alcohol?

The points above may be reasons to show how your club could be linked to having a responsibility with regards to the consumption of alcohol

Gosford Gymnastics Club has become part of a national initiative ‘Good Sport’ of the Australian Drugs Foundation (ADF) to develop safer and healthier communities. Below is a quote from Gosford Owner Manager Lesley Gilbey regarding Gosford’s Good Sport Experience.

“Being a member of Good Sports Australia will benefit our club in several ways.
Firstly the promotion of an alcohol free venue will allow families the reassurance of knowing that while their children are on our premises and participating in our sport, they will be free from exposure to alcohol.

Secondly, our coaching staff follows a code of ethics which restricts the consumption of alcohol while coaching.

Thirdly, our club promotes a drug free policy and teaches children that the abuse of alcohol or drugs has a detrimental affect to their performance.

We encourage all our participants to live a healthy lifestyle including exercise, healthy eating, & a drug free environment.” Lesley, Gosford Gymnastics Club.

Gosford Gymnastics Club are now branded as a ‘Good Sport’ club so the logo will confirm that the club promotes a responsible attitude towards alcohol and that it provides a safe environment for gymnasts, coaches, and families.
