Things to note

This year the SMC is excited to introduce a NDP Squad program. Squad Gymnasts were selected from 2011 Levels 4-10 State Trials and State Championships.

The Gymnastics New South Wales (GNSW) Women’s Gymnastics (WG) National Development Program (NDP) Squads have been commenced to create a development pathway for gymnasts, coaches and clubs in NSW with the aim to maximise the number of NSW gymnasts, educate coaches and achieve successful results at a National level.

The Sports Management Committee along with GNSW office staff will offer guidance and support by tracking, developing, educating and providing the resources for NDP gymnasts, coaches and clubs in NSW. It is anticipated that this will provide the best opportunity for the National levels gymnasts and to increase the numbers and quality of gymnastics within in the program.

Our first clinic for the year on 5 February will involve Squads 1 and 2 gymnasts (Levels 6-10). Information for squad 3 and 4 gymnasts will be sent to clubs shortly once dates and venues have been confirmed. For more information on the Squad programs and how your gymnasts and coaches can be involved, please refer the Squads Handbook soon to be located in the Women’s section on the Gymnastics NSW Website.

Invitation – The SMC would like to invite all coaches and judges to attend the NDP Squad clinics. The clinics will provide a positive learning environment where coaches and judges can work towards a common goal and help each other to improve Women’s Gymnastics in NSW.  Updating points will be allocated for both judges and coaches who attend.

Clinic Date        Sunday 5 February

Time                 9:00am -1:00pm

Venue               Sydney Academy of Gymnastics

Unit 7, 32 Artisan Road Seven Hills

100 Leaders Living With Disability

Helen Webb, Wednesday, 25 January 2012

The 100 Leaders Project is not about being a hero, or being the best at something. It is about people living with disability who have taken control of their own life, who have a vision of what is possible, and who are taking personal action to build the life they want to live.

If you know of someone who has a story to share, please encourage them to get involved.  http://www.dircsa.org.au/blog/the-100-leaders-project-stories-from-people-living-with-disability/

GNSW Launches the Orange Country Championships

Nicholas Carroll, Thursday, 24 November 2011

On Wednesday, 23rd November, Gymnastics NSW travelled west to Orange to officially launch the 2012 Country Championships.

GNSW staff attended with our rhythmic champion, Naazmi Johnston (current RG Sports Program Manager) as well as NSW's Pommel World Champion, Prashanth Sellathurai.

It was a fantastic turnout at the Orange PCYC venue with school kids attending from the St Mary's Public and Bowen Primary Schools, plus members from the Central West Gymnastics Club and Orange PCYC.

The Mayor of Orange, councillor John Davis, was also there on the day, speaking of his excitement at the event being held in Orange.

The launch provided the local school children an opportunity to interact with the two Australian Gymnastic Champions.

Naazmi gave a brief talk about her gymnastic experiences before interacting with the kids who guessed some of the skills you could do with each apparatus, as Naazmi demonstrated each to their delight.

Prashanth also showed his skills walking up and down the courts in a handstand and inviting a few of the young male gymnasts in the crowd to join him. The two then signed a number of autographs and posed for pictures with the elated kids.

Gymnastics NSW would like to thank everyone for their attendance at the launch, where media delegates from the Prime and WIN TV stations, plus local newspaper and radio delegates covering the event provided for a great promotion of the sport in the area.

A big thankyou also goes to the Orange Council and their representatives who have been more than accomodating and have shown a genuine excitement at the Country Championships coming to their community.

All parties are now looking forward to staging the event from July 12-15 in 2012.

Naazmi Provides Champion Advice to United Rhythmic Girls

Nicholas Carroll, Monday, 5 September 2011

Gym NSW's three time Commonwealth Games champion, Naazmi Johnston, recently paid a visit to United Gymnastics in Alstonville, to pass on her expertise to the next generation of gymnasts.

Naazmi assisted in running a day long workshop which was split into three sessions. The first involved the club's State Championship representatives gaining some priceless tutoring from the rhythmic Champion, as they each went through the routines they would be perfoming.

The second session was a flexibility and strength workshop, with girls from the local dance school and artistic club attending in addition to the rhythmic clubs (girls from Yotala Inverell also attended the workshop).

A come and try session for recreation kids finished off the day, with Naazmi also providing an apparatus workshop.

The rhythmic girls were said to be quite nervous and excited about meeting their idol and no doubt gained a great deal of knowledge and confidence from the workshops provided.

Congratulations to Kris and Sam Larnach from United Gymnastics for organising what was a very successful day.
